Visit Karlskrona

The Naval City of Karlskrona

Karlskrona is the town that was sited on an island in the southern Swedish archipelago. King Karl XI founded it in 1680 to create a naval base to protect Sweden, which at that time was a major international power. Many have appreciated the area’s archipelago environment and the old naval traditions. In 1998 Karlskrona became item no. 560 on UNESCO's list of irreplaceable World Heritage Sites. In an international context, the city is of major importance, representing as it does an unrivalled illustration of how a fortified naval town and base from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was planned and established. The armed forces have always played a role in the town’s history and even today a military presence remains. However, in recent years Karlskrona/TelecomCity has also become renowned for its major advances within telecommunications and wireless technology. The town today has an international reputation as one of the places where the development of commercially viable mobile services has come furthest.

The Town Karlskrona is an outstanding example of a late 17:th-century European planned naval city. Shipbuilding, architecture and town planning have attracted attention in Europe since the 18:th century and the naval base and shipyard are still in use today.

At the Old Shipyard you can find the world's longest wooden building, the Rope Walk from 1692, the Vasa Shed and the Polhem Dry Dock, one of the world's oldest dry docks.

The Great Square, one of northern Europe's largest, has the Fredrik Church and the Church of the Holy Trinity, also known as the German Church. Here you can also find the statue of King Karl XI, the founder of Karlskrona.

The Admiralty Church is Sweden's largest wooden church. Outside is the wooden figure of Rosenbom, collecting money for the poor.

The Town of Islands. Stroll from the picturesque Björkholmen to the red allotment cottages on Brändaholm – possibly the most photographed place in Sweden. For a grand view of the”town of islands” go to the top of Bryggareberget hill. Outside town are the open air museum in Vämöpark and Skärva, the country residence of the famous boat builder Fredrik Henrik af Chapman.

The archipelago reveals several islands and historical fortresses. By the yellow ferry, close to The Naval Museum, you will be able to reach the island of Aspö, where you can rent a bike, go for a swim or see the Drottningskär Citadel. You can also visit the Kungsholm's fortress with its circular harbour and exotic plants from all over the world.

Visits are arranged by the Tourist Office: www.karlskrona.se/en/Experience-Karlskrona/

In Connection with Catwalk 09 there will be evening festivities both of the days. Read more at: Banquet Dinner & Cut The wire Awards Ceremony & Party
